10 most important things to teach your son

Tell them about your feelings for their mother.  Allow them to see from you that love is a powerful emotion and that it's okay to feel it.

Love

Teach kids to respect others, including their mother, other children, wait staff, and their belongings.  Encourage kids to value nature, money, and animals.

Respect

Show them the fun side of the sport - not just the competitive and strategic aspects - but the side that made you fall in love with the sport in the first place.

Sports

Take them camping (even if it's only in your garden), on nature treks (find a walking stick along the way), and hunt for birds or plants you can recognise.

The great outdoors

Allow your son to see you being open to new experiences.  Everything from new foods to new places to new adventures – go kayaking, to a baseball game, to a museum, and eat purple carrots.

New experiences

Teach your sons the value of good health, such as brushing his teeth, eating well, exercising, and making doctor's appointments.

Health

Teach your sons the value of social interaction.  Even if you're not a social person, tell them that the secret to success is to ask questions.

Being social

Time is the most difficult thing for many busy fathers to come by.  You are not required to run the league or coach the team, but you must assist with practise at home and attend games.

Being present and showing up

Give them the authority to care for themselves. Help them understand that they are in control of their own happiness.

Being self-sufficient

Buddha said, "Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful".

Finding their purpose
